British Gas has introduced a new scheme aimed at alleviating consumer concerns and accelerating the uptake of domestic heat pumps across the UK.

British Gas has launched its 'Warm Home Promise', a new initiative designed to address common concerns and foster greater adoption of domestic heat pump technology throughout the United Kingdom. The scheme directly responds to findings from the 'Electrification of Heat Demonstration project', previously funded by the Department of Energy, Security and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), which identified cost, disruption, and space as significant deterrents for homeowners considering heat pump installations.

Overcoming Barriers to Adoption

The 'Warm Home Promise', introduced on 10 May, seeks to reassure potential customers who may be hesitant about switching to heat pumps. The scheme includes several key provisions. British Gas is offering a five-year guarantee on all its heat pump installations, complemented by a free pre-winter service to maintain efficiency. In an effort to make heat pumps more accessible, the company has set starting installation prices at £499 in Scotland and £2,999 for the rest of the UK, with a pledge to match any lower price offered by MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certified installers.

The initiative also focuses on streamlining the installation process, with British Gas engineers conducting property surveys beforehand to ensure a smoother experience. A core component of the promise is a 'Warm home guarantee', under which British Gas commits to not installing a heat pump if it cannot efficiently heat a home during the coldest periods, or if a traditional gas boiler would be a more suitable heating solution. Furthermore, the scheme includes expert advice, ensuring installers provide operating instructions on the day of installation and follow up a few days later to confirm a smooth transition for the homeowner.

Driving Towards Net Zero Targets

Andrew Middleton, managing director of British Gas Zero, highlighted the critical role of heat pumps in helping the UK achieve its net-zero emissions targets. He acknowledged that the transition from a conventional boiler can be daunting for consumers and emphasised the company's commitment to making heat pumps both affordable and accessible. Middleton noted the significant efficiency advantage of heat pumps, which are typically 350% efficient compared to the 90-95% efficiency of the best boilers. He reiterated British Gas's policy of only installing a heat pump if it will perform as effectively as a traditional boiler, further stating a money-back guarantee if a customer's heat pump does not heat their home as expected, according to solarpowerportal.co.uk.

What this means for asset owners and insurers

  • Risk Mitigation: The five-year guarantee and pre-winter servicing offered by British Gas may reduce initial operational risks and maintenance costs for asset owners, potentially influencing long-term asset performance and insurance claims.
  • Product Liability & Installation Risk: British Gas's commitment to only installing heat pumps where they are suitable, alongside their 'warm home guarantee' and money-back promise, may reduce product liability and professional indemnity risks related to installation efficacy for themselves and their approved installers.
  • Business Interruption & Property Damage: Improved installation quality and servicing could lead to fewer system failures, thereby decreasing the likelihood of business interruption for commercial asset owners and reducing property damage claims linked to malfunctioning heating systems.
  • Market Growth & Investment: Increased consumer confidence and uptake driven by such schemes could spur further investment in the heat pump supply chain and installer training, creating new opportunities for specialised insurance products covering manufacturing, transport, and installation of these renewable heating assets.
