TagEnergy has announced the financial close for its 49.9MW/100MWh Roaring Hill battery energy storage system in Fife, Scotland, with funding from Santander UK.

TagEnergy, a prominent developer in the renewable energy sector, has successfully achieved financial close for its fourth battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the UK. The Roaring Hill facility, located in Fife, Scotland, boasts a capacity of 49.9MW/100MWh and represents a significant step in bolstering the UK's grid stability and renewable energy integration.

The project has secured crucial funding from Santander UK, with TagEnergy maintaining 100% equity in the development. This marks another collaboration between TagEnergy and Santander UK, following similar financial support for a 49MW/98MWh standalone BESS project in Abernethy, Scotland, earlier this month, underscoring a growing commitment to the UK's energy transition from both entities.

Advancing Grid Stability with Advanced Technology

The Roaring Hill project, which received consent from Fife Council in two phases, is designed to provide essential grid stabilisation and ancillary services. These services are vital for balancing electricity supply and demand, ensuring the resilience and efficiency of the national grid as it integrates more intermittent renewable sources. The facility will utilise cutting-edge Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries, complemented by Tesla's Autobidder AI software for real-time energy trading and control, optimising its operational performance and market participation.

Franck Woitiez, CEO of TagEnergy, highlighted the company's commitment to the UK market, stating that the delivery of the fourth facility at Roaring Hill demonstrates their ambition to leverage large-scale battery expertise to support the grid and accelerate the energy transition. He also expressed satisfaction that Santander UK recognised the value of these projects in enhancing grid capacity and increasing the share of renewables.

Expanding UK Battery Storage Portfolio

TagEnergy's strategic expansion in the UK is further evidenced by its partnership with Balance Power. This collaboration aims to develop, own, and operate 500MW of BESS projects across the UK, with a planned investment exceeding £300 million over a four-year period. This initiative is expected to substantially contribute to the country's energy storage infrastructure, facilitating greater reliance on renewable energy and improving overall grid flexibility. Mark Cumbo, Director of Specialised and Project Finance at Santander UK, reiterated the bank's dedication to supporting projects that deliver positive and sustainable environmental change within the UK's energy sector.

What this means for asset owners and insurers

  • Increased Demand for Specialised Insurance: The continuous expansion of BESS projects, particularly with advanced technologies like Tesla Megapacks, drives demand for specialised insurance products covering operational risks, performance guarantees, and cyber threats to control systems.
  • Focus on Thermal Runaway and Fire Safety: The use of lithium-ion battery technology necessitates robust risk management protocols and insurance coverage for potential thermal runaway events, fire suppression systems, and business interruption from such incidents.
  • Project Finance and Construction All Risks: The funding model involving institutions like Santander UK highlights the importance of comprehensive Construction All Risks (CAR) and Erection All Risks (EAR) policies, along with Delay in Start-Up (DSU) or Advanced Loss of Profits (ALOP) coverage, to protect financing and project timelines.
  • Ancillary Services and Revenue Protection: As BESS assets provide critical grid services, asset owners will need insurance solutions that account for potential revenue losses from downtime or performance issues affecting their ability to participate in grid service markets.
